Theater
The history of the theater goes way back for centuries. The ancient Greeks and Romans, and Egyptians had theaters and performed plays for the kings and the public. The theater told stories and poems about the heroes and lives of the people during that period. The earliest recorded theater event was in 2000 B. C. with the passion plays of Ancient Egypt. They performed the story of the god Osiris once a year at festivals throughout Egypt. These passion plays marked the beginning of the connection of the theater and religion.
The ancient Greeks were the first to introduce theater as an art. They developed definitions of tragedy and comedy and other forms of art. Another form was the satyr plays which became very popular. The Greek plays included the heroes and the gods and other mythological characters that they believed in. Western theater continued to grow and moved on into Rome and medieval England. Theater took on many different forms in France, Italy, Russia, and Spain, during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. There was an American theater which developed in North America during the colonization of the United States.
The history of eastern theater began back in 1,000 B. C. With the Sanskrit drama of India. Japanese theater known as Kabuki, Noh, and Kyogen, go way back to the 17th century. Other eastern theaters cropped up in China, Korea, and Southeast Asia.
There have been many different types of theater crop up over the years. There has been drama, political theater, black comedy, Commedia dell ‘arte, and Tragicomedy. Figures who are recognized in theaters are the directors, playwrights, and actors. Plays are performed with a production team plus a set designer, lighting designer, costume designer, sound designer, dramaturg, stage manager, and the production manager. There is also the artistic staff which is assisted by the technical theater personnel and they handle the creation and execution of the play production. Theater is much more complicated today than it was many years ago.
Some of the most popular festivals known are: Festival Iberoamicano de Teatro de Bogota, Edinburgh International Festival, Golden Mask Festival (Russia), Galway Arts Festival (Galway, Ireland), and Project06 (Galway, Ireland). Other famous festivals are Natyanjali Classical Indian musical theater festival in the Hindu temples of South India, Pacific Playwrights Festival at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California. The Festival Internacional de Artistas de Rua da Bahia in Brazil, the Curitiba Theater Festival in Brazil, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon, the Shaw Festival, Niagra- On -the - Lake, Ontario, Canada, and the Blyth Festival, Blyth, Ontario, Canada.
