A movie theater is a is a theater where one goes to watch a movie. A movie is a motion picture which has moving objects or people or images shown in sequence to make them appear to be moving. A movie theater is a place where people go to watch movies or motion pictures. This location is usually a building and is usually a commercially owned business which caters to the public. Today’s movies are rated so some of them can not be seen to minors under 18. In America the theater is known as a theater, but in other countries it is known as a cinema. In these other countries, the theater is known as a place for live performance plays.

The word theater is spelled as such in the United States but it is spelled theatre according to the National Association of Theatre Owners. Other names these theaters, or cinemas were known as were, the big screen, the silver screen, movie house, the movies, the pictures, the flicks, and the flea pit. They were called the flea pit because the seats were so uncomfortable that people would fidget and it was a long standing belief that the seats were flea infested because the people could not sit still.

The first movie theater or motion picture shown was in the United States and was at the Koster & Bials Music hall on 34th street in New York City on April 23, 1896. The first theater which was built for the showing of motion pictures was Vitascope Hall, on Canal Street, in New Orleans, Louisiana, on June 26, 1896. The building was a vacant store and it was converted into a movie house. On Monday, October 19, 1896, Mitchell Mark and his brother Moe, added what they called Edison’s Vitascope Theater, in the basement of the new Ellicott Square Building on Main Street, in Buffalo, New York.

The movie theater originally consisted of a single auditorium with rows of seats , a lobby area, with a box office for selling tickets, a counter for buying snacks and drinks, and washrooms. Some of the stage theaters were converted into movie theaters by placing a screen in front of or on the stage, then adding a projector in the back of the room behind the customers. Stadium seating style is very common in theaters so the customers can see over the heads of those seated in front of them. The first stadium style of seating in theaters was used in the AMC Grand theater in Dallas, Texas, U. S. A.. This theater opened in 1995. The rows of seats are divided by one or more isles and there is usually no more than 20 seats in each row before there is an aisle to separate it from the next row opposite it.
