Famous as one of the inspirations of Rio Bravo: the scene where Chance
tells Burdette that if anyone rushes the jail the first load of buck
goes into Joe. Hawks noted that any real cop would have laid down that
marker to the first friend of the prisoner who looked crossways at
him. You do have to wonder why Heflin takes all that guff when all he
has to do lay the butt of his shotgun across Ford's head, but then you
don't have a movie.

What I found missing that I expected, was when Heflin was starting to feel a
tempted to take Ford/Wade's offer instead of asking if he would really get
the money, I expected him to ask about what Wade said to him when he
assisted in his capture about getting even. I kept expecting him to ask for
some promise (although don't know how he would believe it) that he wouldn't
harm him or his family if he let him go. The how can I know you'll keep
your word on that would have seemed much more important than how can I
believe I'll get the 7 grand.
