Subject: Re: Adding Music to Silent Films

Making music "fit" a film isn't as hard today as it once was. Video
editing software has come a long ways. I do alot of home video and
like to add background music where live sound just doesn't seem
appropriate. (For this purpose, I especially like some of Tim Janis'
piano music - much of it sounds like music that could have been
scored for silent films.....)

My point is this, I use Sony's Vegas professional editing
software. If I have a sequence that's, say, 3'30" long and I choose a
recorded track that's 3'50", simply right click on the audio track, up
pops a box that allows me to stretch or compress the track without
changing pitch. If course there are practical limits to how far you
can go with this, but my point is that this "miraculous" feat is easy
enough even for an old fart like me......

Of course, this isn't exactly the same thing as making music fit the
action on the screen - that's an art best left to experts like Phil
and Jon and others - but think of all the things the computer has done
for silent films.....
