Very cute idea and is certainly possible. I would think it is
directional at mid and upper frequency ranges only. Low frequencies
would require a rather large array. If you record all the mics in the
array, then it is certainly steerrable after the fact. As storage and
processing gets cheaper, you will see more neat "mumbo jumbo" like
this.
