In the book (and IIRC, in the movie as well), Tom "wants" Sophia from the
time that he meets her, but Fielding puts, umm, diversions in his way.
At the end of the novel, she tells him that she'll consider his suit
(we're left to believe that the answer will probably positive) only if he
can demonstrate that he can behave himself.
