If you can, just rent what you need for the time being but if you need
to buy cheap then look at stuff like this and add other basics like a
mic mount and dead cat from Rode as you see fit

It's a very cheap and cheerful set-up that will at least get you away
from depending on the on-board mic that you may have and give you some
chance of getting some clean audio. Just use this film as an
experiment and see if you like the process. If you do then invest in
better gear when you can, and if you hate film making then you've only
lost a few hundred dollars. At least having the gear will be a way to
keep practising your micing and booming techniques!

I've got to be completely honest here and say that I've never used the
above mic and the pole that's in that kit looks like it will be very
harsh on handling noise but it may just be enough to get you through
this.

If you're still not sure about buying gear then look for any local
film schools as you may be able to get a sound student on-board and
also get the use of the film school equipment.

Best of luck,

Damien
