Matt,
I work on "Inside the Actor's Studio" on occasion so I thought I'd
chime in. We tend to use Omni Lavs (mke 102's as well as various other
"tram-like" elements) and Beta 57 Handhelds into a Shure UHF-R Rack. There
are also various ambient mics in the theater. The space is quite large and
there is multi-tiered seating in the venue. Front of House sound is a must
and it's a fairly sophisticated rig- Speakers on Stands Left and Right with
numerous fills spread throughout the rest of the space. We usually spend a
fair amount of time getting the reinforced sound balanced right so the
production audio is as clean as possible. This usually means that the House
is run fairly low. More speaker boxes spread around tend to make this
easier. Both the Truck and the FOH operate on a full split except for some
playback sources. Depending on the number of talent on stage, a Dugan D2
auto mixer is sometimes inserted on the House sources. We Iso everything to
tape. A band would definitely make it trickier but I think if you can keep
the levels down you shouldn't have too much trouble. Try to get a good A2
and House Sound guy!
