The London Donmar Warehouse "Company" revival is indeed awful on CD -
the good performances (Clive Rowe, Rebecca Front) don't come off well on
the recording, and the bad performances (Anna Francolini, Sheila Gish,
Sophie Thompson) are somehow even worse than they were in the theatre
(Gish, who was a wonderful, wonderful actress, was actually very good in
her book scenes, but her singing was hideous). Adrian Lester, a terrific
actor with a nice but untrained singing voice, is bland on the
recording, which he wasn't in the theatre - but in the theatre he also
wasn't audible (at the Donmar, the show was unmiked). It's not a good
recording at all, but then it wasn't a good production either.
The Mendes "Oliver!" revival is also quite horrible on CD, though
"Oliver!" is not a show I like anyway (come to that, I pretty much hate
Dickens).
