There is a technique which can be used for making 'backlit control
panels'
that might be adaptable for you....The basics are 1) you generate a
transparency
of the image you want. 2) You apply it to the back of a sheet of
plexi. 3) Using a
dremel, you 'mill' away the pattern of the image. 4) Attach a string
of LED sources
in the color of your choice to one edge of the plexi, masking the
LED's so that
they only illuminate the edge in question.
