These signs were made by a high school stage crew, handpainted
(lettering projected on an overhead projector) lit from behind, looked
pretty good onstage. You could do a few in similar fashion from
scrap... a 4" thick shadow box with some C-7 Christmas tree lights
inside. Use translucent for the front. Take extra care in building for
safety's sake. Since they light up you could patch them into a
dimmer...

If I recall correctly, the R in the BAR sign had twinkle lights behind
it, or perhaps a fast chase on white Christmas tree lights which made
a pretty effective "burnt-out" look.

They don't look exactly like neon, but could solve your problem w/o
breaking the bank. We auctioned our signs off after the run (I kept
the CIGAR sign for my bar at home).
