I was looking for a reference to "Zorba" in this ng (Ann Sothern), having
finally given in to the inevitable (the opportunity was there) and am now
appearing in (and enjoying) a production of the K&E "Zorba." (I get to play
my mandolin on-stage in the opening scene, as well as beginning "Life is . .
. a glass of rum!") Depressing book (like the AQ movie), but our "Fiddler on
the Roof" man, Joseph Stein, had to have reveled at the opportunity to work
on another musical with another strong central male ethnic character who
carries the show. (Well, how many strong central FEMALE (ethnic?) characters
has Jerry Herman called upon in HIS shows?)
As far as cast albums are concerned, go with the Herschel Bernardi/Maria
Karnilova OBCR as opposed to the AQ revival -- as great as AQ must have fit
the part. (AQ actually was Mexican, did you know that?) What a great number
that "Good-bye, Canavaro" piece, particularly with the sweet-voiced Maria
Karnilova. (And she was the original "Golde" in "Fiddler," wasn't she?) And
HB was strong, very strong. Much stronger than Quinn. Don't let this cast
album go "out of print" gang! (Or is it already?!)
